Friends of the Edison Public Library Is Proud To Announce:

Edison Town-Wide Spelling Bee 2012
Saturday, March 31, 2012
J.P. Stevens High School

Snow Date: Saturday, April 21, 2012

Join us for our Spelling Bee for Grades 2-5

UPDATE 1/26/2012 @ 8:00am: We have just heard the news from our volunteer handling registration for the Spelling Bee that we now reached our limit of 100 applicants for Division 2 (Grades 4-5). We had previously announced that Division 1 was full. This unfortunately means that if you have not already applied for your child to take part, it is now too late.

If your child’s application has been successful, you will soon be receiving confirmation. If your child’s application has been unsuccessful, we will soon be returning your check/s.

Thank you all for applying to take part, good luck to those who will be participating, and sorry to those who did not get in this time.

The Friends of the Edison Public Library is sponsoring its second town-wide spelling bee on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at John P. Stevens High School, 855 Grove Avenue, Edison (snow date: Saturday, April 21, 2012). Our purpose is to support literacy among the children of Edison, while helping to raise funds for Edison’s libraries.

We want to encourage students in grades 2-5 to participate in what will be a rewarding learning experience and an afternoon of fun. The spelling bee involves two divisions, Division 1 for grades 2-3 and Division 2 for 4-5. Sign-in for Division 1 will be at 12 p.m. and Division 2 at 1:15 p.m. Students in each division will participate in three rounds, one written and two oral.

Rules are posted here (PDF). Application forms were distributed by the Edison Elementary schools to all children, and were available in the Edison libraries, and for download on our website. Please note that, following feedback from past competitors, no word lists will be published this year (*please see note below).

Prizes in each division are: First Prize $100, Second $75, and Third $50.

As noted on the application form, REGISTRATION APPLICATIONS HAD TO BE POSTMARKED BETWEEN JANUARY 17 AND JANUARY 31, 2012. EARLY REGISTRATIONS WERE NOT ACCEPTED. There is a limit of 100 participants per division, with the postmark determining eligibility. Please note that as of January 26, both divisions have been filled.

At least one audience ticket had to be purchased with registration per family as NO tickets will be sold at the door. All entrants must be accompanied by an adult (please see application form for ticket information).

If you have any questions, please use the Contact link above.

For articles and photos from last year’s spelling bee, please see our 2011 Edison Town-Wide Spelling Bee page.

*Note: As mentioned above, we are not publishing word lists this year. Following feedback by last year’s competitors, it was felt that doing so turns the spelling bee into a memory test, rather than a test of spelling ability. If you search the internet, you’ll find plenty of lists of age-appropriate words available. Since 2nd graders will be competing with 3rd graders and 4th graders will be competing with 5th graders, the words used will be appropriate for children of those ages, with more challenging words being used for elimination purposes.
