Spelling Bee News: Division 2 Now Full

We have just heard the news from our volunteer handling registration for the Spelling Bee that we now reached our limit of 100 applicants for Division 2 (Grades 4-5). We had previously announced that Division 1 was full. This unfortunately means that if you have not already applied for your child to take part, it is now too late.

If your child’s application has been successful, you will soon be receiving confirmation. If your child’s application has been unsuccessful, we will soon be returning your check/s.

Thank you all for applying to take part, good luck to those who will be participating, and sorry to those who did not get in this time.

We have just heard the news from our volunteer handling registration for the Spelling Bee that we have already exceeded our limit of 100 applicants for Division 1 (Grades 2-3). This unfortunately means that if you have not already applied for your 2nd or 3rd grader to take part, it is now too late. As of this time (Thursday evening), there are still some spaces available for Division 2 (Grades 4-5).

If your child’s application has been successful, you will soon be receiving confirmation. If your child’s application has been unsuccessful, we will soon be returning your check/s.

Thank You To Everyone Who Helped Make The Fall Booksale A Success!

Another Fall Booksale has been and gone, and we’re pleased to announce that it was a success! Despite fears that fewer donations, the poor economy, more people reading e-books, families going away for Fall recess and the lack of coverage by the local press would result in a very disappointing bottom-line, we were heartened by the comparatively good turnout. People seemed to be buying more books at a time too. Having fewer donations meant that we could concentrate on the quality, and give people more room to browse.

Of course, we couldn’t run this sale every year, if it wasn’t for a great team of dedicated volunteers. In alphabetical order, thanks go to the following people for their help with the sale and its preparation:

We also are indebted to Advanced Stor-Edge Self Storage on Woodbridge Ave., Edison who donate a climate-controlled storage unit year-round; also to Harris Structural Steel, who donate the use of a truck together with workers to help move the books to and from the North Edison Branch Library.

Thanks also to all the people who donated books and other media, and of course to all of you who supported us with your purchases.

Announcing Our Fall Booksale Sat/Sun Nov 5/6 – DONATIONS STILL NEEDED

Our Fall Book Sale will take place Saturday and Sunday, November 5th and 6th, 2011. Here are the basic details:

Saturday, Nov. 5, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 6, 12 noon – 4 p.m.
North Edison Branch Library
777 Grove Avenue, Edison (directions)

Thousands of books in many categories – fiction & nonfiction, hardcover & paperback, including children’s books & large print. Also DVD, VHS, Audiobooks, games, etc.

Most books 50¢-$1.50.

Here’s a little tip: Based on our previous sales, the first hour or two of the sale on Saturday is usually VERY busy, so if you’re uncomfortable with crowds or are bringing children, we recommend coming a little later on Saturday or any time on Sunday for a more relaxed shopping experience.

We are still seeking book donations and volunteers to help with set-up and break-down of the sale (set-up is on the morning of Friday November 4, break-down is Sunday November 6 from 4pm-6pm and on the morning of Monday November 7) and with the sale itself. Metuchen Country Fair POSTPONED 10/1

The Metuchen Chamber of Commerce has decided to postpone the Metuchen Country Fair originally due to take place on Saturday, October 1st, due to the predictions of rain. The fair has been rescheduled to Saturday, October 15; however, this coincides with our Flamenco program at Main Library, so we may not be able to have a booth at the fair this year. We’ll determine that at our next board meeting and make an announcement here.

Come say Hi, find out what The Friends have been up to, what’s coming up, grab some give-aways, play a game and enter our free drawing for one of two baskets of books.

A while back, Edison Public Library held a very successful Family Day at the Clara Barton Branch library. Oriented towards children, but involving the entire family, there was face-painting, crafts, and other activities. Many people came who had not set foot in the library before, found out about all the different services available, and joined on the spot. Friends of the Edison Public Library were very proud to be part of that event, and we’re even more excited to be part of a new family event, this time at Main Library, 340 Plainfield Ave. Edison, NJ 08817, on Saturday, June 4, from 12 Noon to 3pm.

We will have a table at the event, so if you attend, please be sure to come by and say hello. Find out what we’ve been up to recently, and what we have lined up for the future. Sign up for membership, make a donation, or offer to volunteer. We’ll be happy to talk to you about ways you can help support the library you love.

This special program is sponsored by Friends of the Edison Public Library and is a drop in program featuring such fun as face painting, crafts, special balloon crafts, refreshments and more. Come join us for some fun and find out what the library has to offer you and your family. Don’t have a library card yet? This is the day to come in and get your free card (remember to bring proof of residency). Books, magazines, videos, audio books and other resources are available for you to check out.
